Lake Berryessa Mussel Quarantine: What You Need to Know Before You Launch

At Ride On Powersports, we know Lake Berryessa is a top destination for boating, fishing, and fun on the water. But before you head out, it’s important to be aware of the quarantine regulations in place to prevent the spread of invasive mussels — and how you can stay compliant with local rules.

Why the Quarantine Matters

Invasive golden mussels pose a serious threat to California’s waterways, including Lake Berryessa. These small organisms can:

* Clog water intake systems and damage infrastructure

* Harm boat engines and trailers

* Disrupt local ecosystems and wildlife

* Spread rapidly if not properly contained

To protect Lake Berryessa, Solano County and state agencies have implemented a quarantine and decontamination program to stop mussels from being introduced.

What Is the Red Tag Program?

One way to meet the requirements is by participating in the red tag quarantine program, which allows you to launch at Lake Berryessa without having a decontamination —as long as your boat meets the 30-day dry-out rule.

Here’s how it works:

1. Get Tagged Next Door at Gone Fishin’ Marine

While Ride On Powersports does not install red tags, you can visit our sister store, Gone Fishin’ Marine, located right next door at 1880 N Lincoln St in Dixon. Their team is an official red tag placement site.

2. 30-Day Waiting Period

After your boat and trailer are inspected and sealed with a red tag, you must wait 30 days without breaking the seal. This ensures your vessel has remained clean, dry, and mussel-free.

3. Launch at Lake Berryessa

Once the 30-day period is complete and the red tag is intact, you're cleared to launch at Lake Berryessa without an on-site inspection.

Tips for Mussel Prevention

Even if you’re not using a red tag, every boater should follow these simple steps to help prevent the spread of invasive mussels:

* Clean off any mud, plants, or residue after every outing

* Drain water from all compartments, live wells, and bilges

* Dry your boat and trailer thoroughly before your next launch
